Bonny Groves Farm is a regenerative farming enterprise where our focus is on biodiversity and soil health to ensure the future productivity of the farm.

Location

Bonny Groves Farm sits in the foothills of the Brown Mountain on the South Coast of NSW, a short 30 mins inland from Bega. From the major capitals we are 2 hours from Canberra, 6 hrs from Sydney and 7 hours from Melbourne.

The Bega Valley is known for its picturesque countryside, small country towns and friendly folk, and the nearby Sapphire Coast is a popular tourist destination.

Andrew Rawlings

Andrew grew up in the Oberon/Bathurst region in the central tablelands of NSW.  While his parents never owned any acreage of note many of the relatives did.  The most important to Andrew was Mervyn Brien. Uncle Mervyn owned a stunning property in Oberon called Ferndale.  Andrew grew up running around Ferndale watching his uncle working the land and this started his passion for farming.

Throughout his schooling life Andrew studied anything to do with Farming, this also gave him his first introduction to Highlands.  Susan Elder who years later became a Patron of the AHCS, had donated 6 steers to the school and taught Andrew and his peers about the breed and their qualities.  He spent several memorable months training and showing the cattle which started his passion for the breed.  It wasn’t till many years later that Andrew met and married Jeanette that he was able to realise his dream of a Fold of his own!

Andrew is focused on creating a easy run property where the cattle and other livestock can be handled in a calm and quiet manner anywhere on the farm.

Jeanette Rawlings

Jeanette was a Canberra lass with the strong desire for a rural life having loved visiting her aunt’s property near Mudgee NSW.  Over the years she explored treechanging several times until along comes Andrew who had been living and working on the land most of his life now wanting a farm of his own.  It was a match for the ages!

Jeanette’s venture into Highland Cattle began because of a love of Scotland and the desire to have heritage breeds on the farm which best fit with her passion for regenerative agriculture. Jeanette researched the breed extensively and she and Andrew contacted several breeders to ask a ton of questions. After attending the Australian Highland Cattle Society (AHCS) National Show and speaking to the then-President at length, they decided that the fit was right.

Fast forward to now, Jeanette has spent the last five years on the AHCS Council, three years as President.  She is a passionate advocate for the breed and always happy to help anyone on their own highland journey.
